Wow !!!! I am drooling over this item! I am not, alas, in a position to make any offers on it. But good luck though. DO NOT EVER JUST THROW THIS OUT OR GIVE IT AWAY.

The Society began production of these map cases during World War II in aid to the war effort, of which they were a big part at that time - most especially because of the Cartography/map department. Back then the Society had better maps and geographical information than the government!

So, their first case was presented to FDR. Then President Roosevelt requested a new one to give to his "friend", Winston Churchill. Meantime, the Society sent these map cases with the corresponding map indexes to other top ofiicials, like Secretary Vance; but more importantly, to generals Eisenhower, Bradley, etc.

Say, how did you happen to acquire this item anyway? This is quite a find indeed. Thanks for the photos and for posting this. Best of wishes on finding a new, appreciative, home for it.

Cordially,

Scott T. Shier
thanks so much!

i work for a moving and storage company, and we had a bunch of mr vance's stuff in storage. a few months ago his family came in to sort through it and divide it up amongst the family. this was in a pile marked for disposal, and i new i needed to save it from the dumpster! i have a new baby and no real place to display it properly, so its time for it to move on.
Can you email me so we can discuss options? dalemay2004@yahoo.com.au
Do you still have this item? If so, I am interested in purchasing it.

Please email me at chas1888@comcast.net
What happened with the map case, I have one also

I have it on good authority that this particular map cabinet was indeed sold. This original poster/member probably has not been "back" to this site in years.

best,
