National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

The first 2 series of collector cards ran from 1978 to 1986. There were a total of 16 issues offering collector cards. Each issue came with 1 of 3 sheets of 9 cards for a total of 432 collector cards. Now most people tore out the sheets and seperated the cards. This is great except no one knows which issue they need to be looking for to find the missing cards to their collection. So I have built an inventory list of which issue had cards, what are the 3 sheets from each issue and what cards comprise a sheet. Of the 48 possible sheets I have 44 of them complete and in the magazine. I am looking for the 4 missing sheets. If anyone has any with the collector cards included I would buy or trade, if possible, to complete this collection. The issues wanted with 1 of the cards on the sheet are: 1979-Jan cat #12, 1979-Jun Gemstone #13, 1980-Feb Rodent #1, 1983-Nov North America #4.

Thanks, Bill Cole

Hi Bill,

Yeah you know, even though I had my own subscription to WORLD during 1989-1993, I never really knew much about these series of cards. I wish I had kept those : (

I hung on to them until 1999 or 2000, and then when I went away to college, did a major purge of all my posessions.

talk to you soon,

Scott S.

p>s>
could you post a pic or two of these cards on here so I can see [or email some to me]?
Karen, my suggestion on the separate string to you concerning webpage features included imaging along with topical discussions, without first having even come across Scott's reply with the identical request. Nor had he and I had this particular discussion elsewhere. Either two great minds just happened upon the same idea, or it would really add a lot to the facility of the site.

Scott, Bill did you exchange images, and if so, please copy me. In fact bill, it might be really worthwhile for us to have a scanned archive of fronts and backs of all 48 sheets (assuming you're correct and Ursula Vosselar misled me all these many years ago) so anyone can access and immediately know what to look for when the issue lacks the cards or to match a card sheet with an issue from which it has become separated. I won't make unfulfillable promises beyond my immediate ability to attempt, but I'd scan the sheets you're missing when I pull the issues.
Paul, with only missing 4 shets of collector cards I am very sure that I can predict which issue the 3 shhets of cards originated. I'm not saying that there weren't some exceptions but I haven't come accross any exceptions in my search at this time. I would just like to complete my sets and then stop searching.

I'm not exactly sure how to sow the sheets and where would be the best place place to do so especially with 4 sheets missing. I don't have a problem sharing the information it's just the technical adventure of pulling this off.

Bill Cole
It is overwelming to show both sides of 48 sheets so I have included a copy of my inventory sheet. Again if anyone has any of the 4 missing sheets available for trade or sale let me know.

Hi Bill!

Sorry to bother you.  I came across this thread while doing a Google search.  I had almost given up hope that there was anyone else out there who was interested in these cards!!!!  I have also been an avid collector of Nat'l Geographic World Collector Cards since they first came out.  I have almost all of the cards from the first series; I am only missing three (Dog 1, 4, 7).  I need some from the Jan '84, Sep '85 and Feb '86 issues, however.  Do you have extra cards that you would be interested in selling?  If not, do you know anyone who does?  Your list is very thorough and really helps to narrow down the cards and issues I need...thanks so much for compiling that!  Do you need any cards?  I have extras as well.  Thanks in advance...talk to you soon!

Tony

Tony, I had completed the entire set in full sheets excpt for one sheet.  I have sold the entire sheet-set a number of years ago.  I then sold all of the remainder of the magazines to someone else, sorry.  I still have the complete document of my analysis on the cards.  If interested please send a request to bill_cole0@lycos.com'.
