National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

Hello!

I'm helping a client clean out and organize their basement and we've come across a rather large collection of National Geographic magazines. They have just been sitting in cardboard boxes for over forty years - so they have not been preserved well by any means. However, it seems like somebody would want and appreciate them.

I'm not sure what (if any) monetary value they have, so I'm looking for:

  • advice on what they're worth and what to do with them (in the Denver area would be great), or
  • someone who is interested in buying them or taking them and is willing to pay for shipping

We haven't had a full look through the collection to see exactly what is there and what condition it's in - I'm hoping to do this next week. But while doing a quick look over the four boxes, I saw issues from 1929 through the1960's, so it's possible the collection spans further than that.

Any information or advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Wow. Thank you for this information. This is impressive data. The earliest issue we've come across is from 1918, but I don't think any of the issues we have would meet the Very Good standards. It would seem that, based on the way this collection was "stored," that each issue does not have much monetary value. I know there are a lot of variables at play, but would you say that collections like these are a dime a dozen and not worth saving?

Very difficult to say sight-unseen, but the VG quality is getting harder to find in the 20's, 30's and 40's. One possibility would be to check out the "dealer directory" link in the upper left corner of the main page. Give some of them a call and see what they have to say about it.

Good luck!

Ok, great. I'll give that a go. Thanks again for your advice!
