Greetings -

Here is a bronze medal/medallion produced by the Medallic Art Company, of Danbury Connecticut. It was struck (presumably) in 1987 for recognition of the 100th Anniversay of the National Geographic Society (1888-1988).

Please see my 2 photos for front and back images. On the side lip/edge is engraved "Limited Commemorative Edition of 1,000". The front is of course, the great Seal of the Society.

Weight: 9.8 ounces

Measures: 3" diameter, 1/4" thickness

I acquired it via an eBay auction in summer 2008. I have no idea what it originally retailed for. I have only seen this medal once - which is why I purchased it, and I have not heard of anyone else ever talking about its existence.

Perhaps this medal was only made available to N.G.S. staff and employees....?

Just wanted to share this item with anyone who is interested! Kind regards,

Scott - These medallions were indeed created by the National Geographic Society to commemorate the Society's 100th Anniversary. I am not sure that all employees and staff members received a medallion, but I do know that some were given to people that were invited and attended the centennial celebration. Not sure how many were struck, but to my knowledge, they were never offered for sell. Examples have shown up over the years for sell, but not many. Obviously, any serious National Geographic collector would want one for their collection.

Scott,

I also have one in my collection and I purchased it through EBAY, but not sure of the year.

It is a very nice medal
