National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

In my research of the January 1983 Washington DC map, I asked Jeffry Persons for assistance as to whether Roger Nathan acknowledged it as a supplement in his unpublished 2001 update to his collectors guide. (He did.)

As well as providing me the information I requested, he also listed several other maps that Mr. Nathan noted as being reprinted or revised. One of those maps was the two-sided July 1989 Map of France and Historical France.  Jeffry states that Mr. Nathan "mentions the July 1989 double map error of France and Historical France where the first copies did not include Ireland in the Irish Sea.  These copies were sent to the Canadian addresses and the Pacific addresses before the mistake was discovered."  I do not know how many of these early copies were printed before the mistake was caught.

I decided to roll the dice and purchase a copy of this map on eBay from a book dealer in Canada, not knowing if it would be the sans Ireland version or not.  I lucked out and now have both versions of this map as you can see in the images of the upper left corner of both maps.

With Ireland:

Without Ireland:

Notice that the shipping routes between Britain and Ireland are also missing from the bottom map, as well the labels for the St. George's Channel and Celtic Sea.

I have 3 copies  of the map ..unfortunately all have Ireland...

Phil,

Before I ordered the map from Canada, I had two copies - both with Ireland.  I contacted a dealer on the west coast and had him check his stock.  He had 6 copies - all with Ireland.  That's when I took a chance with the Canadian dealer.  I figured, worst case, this would give me my third regular copy.  But I lucked out.

A Canadian collector on this site contacted me...He had 3 copies without Ireland.. He wanted one with Ireland.. I traded 2 copies with Ireland for 2 of his copies without Ireland..

Phil,

I know Jim.  I helped him complete his Annual Index collection.  He offered to sell them to me but I didn't need them so I suggested he contact you.  I'm glad you got them.

Well played Tom, thanks for the info!

Mel

This was an awesome "catch" Tom, excellent share. I saw this earlier on, but held remark pending going to pull my copy or copies, and as yet have not been able to. I still want to see what mine is/are!
