A little more information please?

Is the set entirely bound or a mixture of loose (individual issues) and bound volumes? How are the volumes bound, i.e. with or without covers and ads?

Are all the supplements present?

Are the years 1888 through December 1907 reprints, original, or some of both?

Specifically, are Volume I, No. 2 & No. 4 "originals?"

And yes, pictures are worth a thousand words...

Everything is bound. I need to check on the ads. I know there are maps
These are not reprinted to my knowledge. All original, excellent condition. I'm sure it's a home run

Do your first 18 volumes have "any" individual magazine "covers" bound within the homogeneous volume set (not the miscellaneous issue bindings)? This is the easiest, and quickest, method of determining whether the issues are original or reprint.

Unfortunately, I have observed "reprints" bound without covers in an attempt to pass them off as original.

If the covers are bound within, get back to me and I'll describe the easy method of how to determine their status.

If the covers are NOT bound within, our task will be more complicated, but still doable.

Again, pictures tell a thousand words, i.e. pictures of the covers from a bound volume, or, if no covers exist, the first page(s) of several of the issues bound within.

Without actually seeing the inside of the bound volumes, it appears the bound sets may actually be the reprints "bound" with the miscellaneous bindings representing a collection of originals that may have been on hand at the time of binding.

Your thoughts/comments?

Melvin, I will get more info for you soon. I am working this week but have the weekend off. I can get more photos and even a video for you.

I am very much looking forward to seeing/hearing the details. If possible, I would also enjoy knowing the history of the collection and the process by which it was collated into the very attractive airplane globe bindings - obviously a labor of love...

Thank you in advance for taking the time to do this.

Greetings Wyatt,

I echo Mel's sentiment. The Albrecht "plane & globe" hardcover bindings are indeed a gorgeous presentation for an NGM collection. Did I miss the detail somewhere, or did you indicate up to what year do the plane & globe bindings go?

Also, rest assured, your taking the time to respond to Mel's queries, with some more detail and perhaps pictures will make others here satisfied as well... those whom are perhaps "silently" keeping on eye on this post-conversation of yours. Welcome to the 'Corner, and thank-you for sharing this.

Thank you for responding Scott. I was able to go there last night and pulled a few down to inspect. They all seem to be original but I am no expert. The 1-4 volumes have just plain jane cover pages with all the maps included.
The later ones have yellowish "covers" a little thicker than the normal pages so I can only assume they are the real deal. To my surprise there is advertising bound in the back of each one and was a joy to read! A quick trip to NC would open any collectors eyes to what I'm selling. I will include as many photos as I can but feel that this collection will not last long. One or two of the later bound volumes has had some water damage but not bad. The pages were slightly stuck and popped apart with little effort and no tearing. The leather bound covers go all the way from 1888 to 1963
On a side note, my grandfather also had Time, Readers Digest and Fortune magazines bound as well. I am researching those values too. All are complete from the beginning and I will find out which years they cover...cheers
