Two Versions of the January 1953 Issue

Credit where credit is due: The research for this was done by Jeff Persons, a collector and member of the 'Corner.  The images are from Philip Riviere, the 'Corner's resident photographer.

As stated in the heading there are two versions of the January issue of the National Geographic Magazine.  You could not tell this fact from the covers, however, since all the issues appear identical.  There are two separate images which appear at the top of page 2 in the different variants.

The first image is a photograph of the Joint Chiefs of Staff sitting at a table in the pentagon with maps of Europe and the Arctic as a backdrop:

In the second version, the top of the second page has a photograph of the General of the Army, Omar N. Bradley, with his wife and two grandchildren in his garden with the Washington Monument in the distant background.  (Notice the canons in the garden):

As for any statistics on the prevalence of either version, right now I have very little to go on.  Currently I know of five copies of version 1 and only two copies of version 2 (again thanks to Jeff and Phil).  If anyone cares to let me know which version, (or versions) of page 2 they have, it would e greatly appreciated.  I will update this post with any additional data.  Thanks in advance.

Tom,

Found a second version 2.. I now have 2 version 1's and 2 version 2's..curiously the 2-1's are in bound volumes and the 2-2's are individual issues. (The 3rd 1 was  a digital copy which should not be counted.)

Phil

I have one of each: bound (version 1); loose issue (version 2).

Thanks for the input Jeff & Tom!

Grrr..... variances like this drive me up a wall !  Heh heh. For the record:  I prefer the 1st photo better.

Haha and I thought I had my work cut out by just hunting the cover page variations! :D

I have version 1
