National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

First of all, I'd like to give a big HELLO to my fellow members of the Collector's Corner. Today is my first day, and I'm proud and happy to be one of you. I've been reading the discussions for some time, and have gotten to know a few members through eBay and their websites. It seems like a caring and unselfish group to me - maybe some of it will rub off on me!

Been thinking for a long time about putting decent heavy stock Photoshop covers on very old issues with cover problems. This would bring two benefits:  first, it would create a magazine pleasing to the eye in one's collection; and, secondly, would make a very attractive copy out for sale. I have called several companies in the greater Orlando area about this, but it's too small potatoes for them. Perhaps a member would be willing to do this as a sideline. I, for one, would be willing to pay for this service. I have about 30 unattractive copies from the 1880's that I would love to "dress up" and sell. In truth, I'm going to sell my entire collection, saving the creme de la creme till I gasp my last breath, clutching the money. lol

Since the Society didn't copyright its earlier issues (up until when, I don't know - I assume until about 1900), their would be no issues in that area. In fact, I believe Boxbaum stated that the Society announced in an early issue that the public was welcome to copy any article. One would assume that the cover was included. I sincerely believe that this move is inevitable, both protecting and enhancing hitherto ugly issues, and the person with the gumption and foresight to do this might make a name for her- or himself.

My ears are stretched to hear your comments, and my arms are stretched to receive your welcome.

Oops! Said 1880's - should have said 1890's (only one from 1880's needs dressing up).

Ted,

While faux covers sound like a good idea, I do not think they will add any value to an old magazine.  I have been looking for 9 issues from the 1890's.  I've limited my search to 1964 reprints (individual magazines, not bound volumes) but "ugly & naked" originals might fall into my price range.  Please let me know when you are going to sell them.

Tom,

OK. Vol.I,#3 (no cover), Vol.III, #1 (tears on front cover), Vol.VI, #1 (ditto), #4 (cover detached), #5 (cover detached), #9 (cover tears). Those are the earliest. Incidentally, don't have Vol.I,  #1 in any condition.

Ted

Ted,

I'm interested in Vol. VI, #1 (January 1896).  If you want to discuss price, payment, & shipping my email address is: wilsong@comcast.net

Thanks for responding so quickly.

Tom

Ted,

Sorry, I don't need the ones you listed.  Eight of the ones I need are "red brick".  The only other one I need is Vol VII, #1 (January 1896).

Tom

By the way, Tom, I agree with you that faux covers would not add value, just a certain ineffable cachet, a certain psychological edge for the seller. We humans, especially we optimistic humans, like to believe that whatever life gave us is good - we put a faux cover on our lives, and imagine it's something better than it is. Whoa! Are you getting the gist of any of this? Sometimes I have trouble expressing a conviction.  Ted

I understand, and agree.  I was merely commenting on value, not aesthetics.  BTW, sorry for the last post.  As soon as I clicked "Add Reply" I realized my mistake.  It said I had 15 minutes to edit, but it added my revision to the comment instead of replacing it.

Good luck on your sale.

Tom

Tom,

1896 has been one of my troublesome years - no Jan. - only one copy that's VG (Nov). Was picky way back when and rejected several '96 with flaws. Later wished I hadn't. Ted
