Index of photographers?

Could anyone tell me if there is a way to track down articles in which a particular photographer's work appeared in National Geographic Magazine? I'm researching the life and work of a man named Thomas Michael McKee (may be listed as T. M. McKee), who reportedly had photographs published in the magazine. He was based in western Colorado and his work (black and white photographs) would have been published between about 1890 and 1939, when he died. His photographs would most probably appear in articles/photo essays about Colorado, Utah, and Native Americans in this area.

I have an old index book for the years 1888-1946, but he is not listed; however, it doesn't seem that photographers are indexed in their own right.

Do any of the more recent index books or cd-roms list photographers? Is there a Society archive that might have this information?.

(I have not yet searched for a specific photographer in that Index database though). The Index to Publications (on this site) is supposed to be current and up-to-date, unlike the printed Indexes, obviously.

If this does not help you, then try and send a message to Karen Huffman, or Cathy Hunter, who are both listed on this Collector's Corner as L.I.S. staff (library, information services, and Archives).

I found a tid-bit on Mr. McKee for you:


ROLAND McKEE - - was an argonomist w/ the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the 1920's and 1930's. [photos published = YES ; dates unknown = ?]

I obtained this very brief biographical note in The Photographer's bios section, of a book titled "ODYSSEY: Photography at National Geographic” (1988, NGS & Corcorran Gallery).

There is an article, May 1920, called “Common Mushrooms of the United States”, which features a photo The Inky Coprinus (mushroom plant) on page 73 of “Odyssey”.
