National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

I was given a very large collection of National Geographic magazines ranging from 1907 to 2005. The magazines from 1907 to 1976 have been bound by volume. From what I can tell they are in almost perfect condition and look like they have never been read. The magazines are from 1977 to 2005 and seem to be in very good shape and also don't look like they have been read. I haven't had time to go through them all but I have been told that all issues are there.

Does anyone know how much these could be worth?

I can post pictures later if that would help.

Deending upon binding and whether covers and adds were bound in, value could go from $500 to close to $5000. I sold a very similar set (1906-1974) five years or so ago in the very desirable Albrecht airplane-and-globe, all uniform, but unfortunately no adds or covers. I got $2000 for it from an acquaintence, because that is about how much I figured the bound component cost me in buying out the collectors ephemera and stuff I really wanted. I recouped my money almost immediately, so I was happier than having to list decases or individual volumes on eBay or whater. I might have gotten something more, and Nick Koopmann is certain to telll you he can fetch on the higher end of that range. See what his Collectors Exchange has on commission now for a better idea.
If inquiring for insurance purposes, the set needs to be scheduled, sometimes as a fine arts rider depending upon what your State Insurance Department requires for homeowners' policies. Replacement value I would put at least $1000 regardless of binding, and depending on what you have $5000 is likely what Nick would charge to replace a set immediately.

Best of luck
