Does anyone know, or have insight as to the origins of this poster? - (which I am inserting as an image below).
It is the 1988 Centennial poster of the 'NGM' covers, Oct. 1888 through September 1988; with the 1888-1959 covers being only a truncated sampling of the "versions" & styles of covers during that era(s). Then, from September 1959 - Sept. 1988, it showcases every cover.
- was this issued w/ a book? ;
- this was NEVER issued as a supplement to any 'NGM' in 1988 or 1989 ;
- to my knowledge it did not come as a bonus insert to C.D.B. Bryan's centennial history of the Society, "100 Years of Adventure & Discovery" ;
- ...was it only for sale @ Society's Washington, D.C. headquarters, vis-a-vis Explorers Hall ? ;
- Every copy of this I have ever seen across decades IS folded ;
- did it come w/ the first batch of "Odyssey: Photography At National Geographic" ? -- i.e., the book accompanying the centennial exposition of Nat Geo images + photography that ran 1988-1989 (curated + run by Jane Livingston) ;
- ...to my knowledge it never came inserted with either the Centennial Index deluxe box set, nor the c. 1988 Centennial Illustrated "Historical Atlas of the United States" . . . ;
- [I jhave noticed for years & years this has been fairly readily available on sites like eBay -- for example, I have several copies of this, all from eBay from 2006-2020.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Years back, I endeavored to find out its origins, and how people [originally] obtained copies, to no avail. Karen Huffman and Cathy Hunter also were not able to guide me, back circa 2008-09.
* this is fresh on my mind again as 1) I just had 1 of my copies pressed, dry-matted & framed, and 2) Dale Murphy was just asking me last week if I knew its origins . . .
