Here's several presentations of the news (the first item is the most analytical). I'm going to keep my comments to myself other than providing the links --->

This is desperately sad news.
Well, keep in mind, NGM is still to be printed + mailed to subscribers and contributing members. It's being taken off newsstands -- a place it never used to be from 1888-1996-ish. The publication is not currently cancelled.
All true, but laying off almost all of your writers is not a good sign.
Nope, I know it's awful -- a long time coming and I've been dreading & expecting it. I only clarified because I see a lot of people elsewhere online who are reacting that they think the entire magazine is folded and has just ceased to exist.

Sad news indeed. Nothing lasts forever, but I was hoping that the Nat Geo would outlive me. Now, maybe not.
. . . well, my subscription expiration date shows November 2059 -- I want what's been promised!
You are correct Scott, an expected event.
And to recall - publications had reached 10 million at one time, now down to 1.7 million.
The beginning of the end.
So, I'll say it: it's like everything Disney has touched has been fouled...
*grumble*
(don't get me started on Disney . . . I wasn't happy w/ the 20th Century Fox relationship NGS had either!)
The Society stated that they would stop publishing Newsstand and Foreign versions of the Nat Geo in 2024. I've been purchasing Newsstand copies each month of 2024, and, more recently. Japanese and German copies. The Newsstand versions would appear from the 12th through the 16th of each month. The December Newsstand issue has still not appeared. It looks like they finally pulled the trigger. The Japanese issues would appear around the 23rd of each month. I'll update any changes here if they occur.
I never heard that they would discontinue foreign editions when they announced the end of the newsstand version in the US. The Spanish edition has been issued as usual during 2024. According to their website, in 2023 it was still the most read paper magazine in the country, with over 2 million copies each month. It would be foolish to kill it, but I'm afraid that decisions are not always rational these days...
Apologies, Juan. I either misread the article last year or misremembered it now. After rereading it, it states that the newsstand issues were ending, but no mention of foreign issues. I hope they keep coming.
Yours in collecting,
Tom Wilson
Juan,
I just found and ordered the December German Edition of the Nat Geo. I have not seen a Japanese Edition, but the vendor might have stopped selling on eBay. I'm glad your issues are still coming.
