National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

When I was in high school in the mid-90s, my parents got me the National Geographic CD archive as a Christmas present. I seem to remember the 30+ disc set ran something around $120 when it came out.

I just saw an ad in this month's NGM about their new DVD Complete collection (looks like it runs to December 2008); Amazon has it for under $50. This is top of my Christmas list for the year; I'm just curious if anyone's seen or used it and can comment on the quality of the scans. NGM's website claims they're scanned at 1200 dpi; I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison between the 2009 DVD set and the 1996 CD set.

Does anyone already have a copy? I'm given to understand it's only been on sale for two or three weeks now.

One would think their marketing people would offer such a comparison of the old and new as means to entice owners of the first hundred years on CD Rom and issue thereafter to invest money to update to the new DVD set. I suspect if it $50 on Amazon now, it may be $29 after the holidays.

I hate reading on screen, so may wait until the DVDs turn up "used" as gifts that were auctioned rather than regifted

Happy collecting the real magazines

Amazon has it discounted already, I think list is $70. Also, if you do still have the original program from the '90s, it won't run on OS X (I currently have a Windows XP partition to run it and other old Win 95 programs), so upgrading to the new DVD set makes sense.
