As some of you are aware, I like using the NGM Indices when I research different topics. This includes the cumulative indices as well as the volume indexes. While researching how the metadata treats the newer perforated supplements as a follow on to my last discussion, I found a troubling (to me) notification on the on-line NGS Publications Index:
ALERT! The Publications Index will no longer be updated as of September 30, 2015.
A little background to the slow demise of this kind of research material is in order:
The most recent cumulative index was the 1888-1988 "Centennial" index. As with previous cumulative indices, this one has additional, supplement indices of one or more years. The last one of which I am aware is the 10-year 1989-1998 supplement. After that, no more cumulative indexes are available.
The last volume index was for volume 182 (Jul-Dec 1992). Starting in 1993, the Society began printing annual indices of all their publications. These continued through 2010 when, it was announced that these too would be discontinued. At that time, it was recommended that people should reference the above on-line index for publication from 2011 on. [The NGS Publications Index can be found near the top of the left hand column of the Main page of the 'Corner]
With the Publication Index no longer being updated, it means that as of the October 2015 issue there is no easy way to look up a topic of interest.
I just thought the people in this group should be made aware of this turn of events since I know of no announcement concerning this.

Thank you Tom!
I wonder if this is the beginning of the end?
