The Only (So Far) Holographic Advertisement in the National Geographic
A recent discussion about the December 1988 (Earth) holographic issue had me pull out my copy of that issue [ Thanks Dalton! ;-) ]. While admiring the cover, I decided to make a copy of the back, since it was a hologram as well. A little background first: this issue was the third holographic cover in the magazine's history; the first two being March 1984 (Eagle) and November 1985 (Hominid Skull). This was, however, the first to have the entire cover (front, spine, and back) as one continuous hologram. That meant that the back cover, used for advertisement, was available for a holographic ad. MacDonald's bought the spot, and I'm sure the money they paid for it help defer the cost of producing it.
The three holographic covers were all in the mid- to late-'Eighties and do seem to have been just a fad. I am not surprised that, after the trouble they had producing the December 1988 issue, the production of holographic covers ceased.
