National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

We happened across a collection of Nationonal Geographic spanning the years of 1956 through 1975. Each year is in it's entirety and as far as we can tell every insert is in each magazine. There are a handful that have "use" in their bindings but all the rest look like they have never been touched. I am thrilled to have this collection at my shop (Coffee House) under lock and key in a display case, but am curious as to how much it is valued at for insurance reasons. Thank you in advance for any help. ~Sabra

I regret, as a long time and avid collector, to dispel any hope of significant value. The earliest part of that run was still millions of issues and still relatively easy to come by in very good to mint condition. At most they are worth $10-$20 a year before 1960 and I'll sell any and all at the price if anyone wants my duplicates. After about 1965, there are individual issues that certain individuals from time to time may want, but no steady market. I sometimes give them away for 25 cents if someone is making an order of enough to justify my time packing and mailing.
In short, while you should preserve and appreciate (but also use) this collection, it would cost you more to declare or endorse them on your policy than it would to replace them (I'd probably do the entire run for $100 excluding freight) should fire or other casualty. Sorry to disappoint.
Thanks Paul! Your information if far from a dissapointment. This allows me to share the issues with everyone in the shop, I am not paranoid about damage anymore. ~Sabra
