Reference the third (3rd) ad page from the back cover:
I have one issue with a picture captioned:
“WHAT THE LARVA OF A BEAUTIFUL SWALLOW-TAIL BUTTERFLY LOOKS LIKE”
And one issue with a picture captioned:
“A DEMON FLY KILLER: THE PRAYING MANTIS”
Both issues are exact in all other respects, to include the fourth (4th) ad page from the back cover, i.e. the reverse side of the third (3rd) ad page.
Both photos are by David Fairchild and are from the “Book of Monsters.”
Has anyone else discovered such anomalies for this issue or any others?

Mel,
I have 3 copies(one digital from the DVD) of the Aug. 1914 Nat Geo . All 3 have the mantis add. The second add from the back which faces the pages (Adds) in question is for a Nat Geo book "The Book of Monsters" The mantis and I presume the larva pics are from the book of Monsters. I guess they used a mix of different pics to illustrate the left side of the 2 page add for the book. We'll have to go through all our early mutiple copies and look for similar multi-pic adds.

Phil,
Something new "rediscovered!"
I wonder how many of the old guys like Buxbaum took this knowledge with them?
Yes - we'll have to go through them all; and yes, the picture of the larva is the same picture on the cover of the "Book of Monsters" first edition.
Thanks for your reply!
Mel
Mel,
Better late than never. I have four loose copies with two of each picture. I also have two bound sets with one of each picture.
By the way I do have added info on the Map Indexes and was wondering if you would like to see my list. There are quite a few additions. I could e-mail it to you, if you could give me you email.
I also have a fairly detailed update on the six-months indexes if you would like.
Jeff
message sent with email - thank you!
Mel,
I'm very late to this rodeo, but anyway I have version 2 (with the Praying Mantis).
And here is version 1 (from my July 1914 issue).
I noticed that the September 1914 issue has the Mantis as well. It looks like they made the switch from version 1 to version 2 sometime during the August 1914 run.
