This map was sent to me by Scott Shier because of my interest in Nat Geo maps. It was acquired from a Chinese E-Bay seller back in 2013. It is printed on a vinyl material that I have never seen before. The quality is very very good. It is a beautiful map. I believe that this was not a Nat Geo Issue. The detail is not Nat Geo quality. The above 6 pictures (3 of the "paper" map then 3 of the "vinyl" map in increasing close-ups). The Nat Geo paper map has a copyright notice in the lower left corner under the frame. The vinyl map does not. The paper map was folded. The vinyl map was rolled. Both maps are exactly the same size. I wonder who produced this map and how many of them are out there.......the pics are hi def.. click on the map to see closer detail

It's not 1 of the copies the NGS is currently selling?
Harold
A beautiful replica, Phil.
I agree that it is probably not issued by the NGS, they would never omit a copyright. And without a copyright there is no way of telling when this map was produced (or reproduced).
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Tom
I don't see copyright information on my copies of the 1893 maps I bought from the Society.
Harold
Actually Harold, the NGS did not copyright its publications through 1907. The January 1908 issue, copyrighted 1907, was the first.
Thanks for that information.
I can confirm-or-clarify: the seller stated it was a "high-quality" reproduction. At the time, the seller was the one doing them. This wasn't the only map he/they were making -- there were other NGM/NGS maps they had in a similar "vinyl" type printing. It's just that I don't have the original description or info. on this anymore, and the seller seems to have left this blessed pot, this realm, this Earth.
