This is truly one of the most popular and highly regarded (and desired) issues of the 'National Geographic' magazine ever published.
There was extensive coverage of the entire event in this issue - a space lover's dream come true . . . such excitement, pride, and knowledge!
This cover was seen by virtually every American at one time and place or another. So many of the 'Baby Boomer' generation will say "I remember that issue", or "I recall when that issue arrived in the mail"

This issue was also the 2nd one to include a flexi-mini LP inserted/attached inside the binding - to be removed and listened to.
The first was in August 1965, commemorating the passing & funeral of Sir Winston Churchill (also a cover story).
There was only 1 more after this 'Space Age' LP, and that was the 'Songs of the Humpback Whales' in the January 1979 issue of 'NGM' - (though not a cover story)

This issue came w/ the 2nd mini-flexi LP attached inside of the issue, which you would tear out and cut into a round shape, perhaps - [it could be played in its square shape, too].
This was the "Sounds of the Space Age" featuring audio from Mission Control, the Astronauts on their intercoms, and the famous first words when a human foot touched the Moon's surface for the first time ever . . . "That's One Small Step for a Man, and one Giant Leap, for Mankind".
One of the most significant accomplishments of We, Americans, in the 20th Century. The nation and the world were united in watching the Moon Landing, or listening on their radios. Also was said: "We came in Peace For All Mankind".
Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins represented all humanity on this momentous occasion. In some ways, there were no words (at the time; indeed, even Walter Cronkite lost his words momentarily on live CBS News coverage). Then Mr. Cronkite emphasized "...that's man on the moon, a 38-year old American standing on the moon, this day of July 20th, nineteen hundred and sixty-nine..."
This is a 'patriotic' and meaningful event in the life & history of Our Nation. As the Apollo 8 Astronauts said on December 24, 1968 ---> "God bless all of you - all of you on this good Earth".
