Ziga, can you please tell me what those article titles are? And which Roman or Greek person is that in the center "medallion" ?
Scott, of course:
The cover title is "Emona - A City in the Land of Terrible People" (A local story in that issue, more below)
Other titles are:
1) "Deadly Plants" (The title in the English-language edition was "The Venus Flytrap Diet")
2) "Figures From Nasca" (The title in the English-language edition was "Secrets of Peru's Nasca Lines")
3) "Little Clownfish" (I believe this story is the one titled "Befriending Nemo" in the January 2010 issue of the English-language edition)
4) "Peoples by the Omo River" (The title in the English-language edition was "Upheaval in the Omo")
5) "Rebirth of Shanghai" (The title in the English-language edition was "Shanghai Shows Off")
The "Emona" story:
Emona (or Colonia Iulia Aemona) is (was) a Roman city, a precursor of modern day Ljubljana, established around 14 AD. In 2009 and 2010 the Congress Square (Kongresni trg) in Ljubljana was undergoing a major reconstruction so archaeological excavations and research had to take take place before works could begin. The story featured in the March 2010 issue is about those excavations. The medallion you see in the centre of the cover is a carnelian gemstone, one of many found, with an engraving of a deity (the name of which is not given in the article or elsewhere). The word "terrible" in the title of the story is what the Romans used to describe the peoples living around Emona (various non-Roman tribes).
In 2014, the local edition of NGM featured another story about Emona to commemorate the Roman city's bimillennial.
Thanks for the translations Ziga! I am always interested to know the "variations" in the local editions Vs. the U.S. versions. One thing I have known for a long time is that here and there a story we have in one month's NGM is not in the same foreign edition month, but might show up in a prior or later issue.
(*such as your example above, RE: January 2010 = "Befriending Nemo" but in your March 2010 issue w/ a different title "Little Clownfish") --->
