A Life Member of, and Sustaining Contributor to, The National Geographic Society. I became very interested in the Society itself during the Centennial 1988 year when I was 10. Became a proud member for my 12th birthday, January 1990. At last I didn't have to wait anymore for my Grandparents to be done with their NGM issues!

    Scott,

About the NGS March--as far as I know we do not have a digital version available, but I'm running your question by someone else. We do have an old audiocassette that I may see if we can make available. I'll get back to you on that, as well whatever I find out about a better version of the Bernstein theme.

    Thanks Scott,

Sure looks different then the last time I was on here. It was just a bulletin board in the late 90s. I haven't been actively collecting for almost 10 years but my wife and I bought a house, so I am going to start again. It's good to see the community has grown.

Thank you for sharing the Dogs & Titanics post. It's a great story. I'm in the Knowledge Management area of my professional association and love the ideas of stories. I don't have great ones like this, tough. I've bookmarked it on my Del.icio.us account as well. It also great to hear from you and see your activity on Collectors Corner. I also love to see the interest groups form around particular topics. I was talking to Cathy last weekend and sounds like she has a lot of great ideas for sharing historical perspectives from the archives.

Sheesh :O my bad, I haven't been on the site lately. I finally saw your request. :-)

Hi Scott, thanks for the Nat. Geo. friendship!!

Hi, Scott, Great to hear from you and thank you for the reminder. Yes, the six of us will watch. We are babysitting our two granddogs -- two brindle Bulldogs -- along with our Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Silver Lab (not yet AKC recognized). I like the coonhounds and the Icelandic sheepdog. ~ Karen

Hi Scott, I haven't been on here for a while either, but good to hear from you... I've got to update my page, add some new photos and other collection stuff...

    Scott,

thanks a lot for the warm welcome. I have been following on and off for many years, especially on the old forum, but I'm now determined to help keep this site alive, and it's so much better.

    regards,

Does you know the exact pricing on Original National Geographic Magazines Volume 1 No. 2, 3 and 4??   Thanks
  • Jess Leonard

I have only the current and last years, and a couple from 2008 I bought at the airport.  Looking to get some back to my birth year, though that may be a lot (336).  I currently live in the States.
  • Jess Leonard

    That's 336 issues, not years!  :)

    Scott,

Under what group would I include article reprints from the NGM?

Also, I have many books that relate to NGS, but not published by NGS.  They relate to the Society's explorations, Hubbard medal winners or just the use of the Society's resources.  Would they go under the Technical group?

    Thanks for your help,

    Jeff

  • Scott T. Shier

Hey Jeff, thanks for the interest in wanting to post and for the good question. Perhaps it shows that I/we still need to re-word or clarify more explicitly what some of the groups are //supposed// to be. I'm open to suggestions anywhere I can clear up the verbiage in the Info. in each group (at least the ones I created, that is).

Anyway, if you are referring to things like the technical reports that were co-sponsored by NGS-Yale Univ., or NGS & Smithsonian, etc. those type things should go under the Vintage,Technical group.

Looking at the 20 groups that exist right now, if you have stuff about Hubbard Medals, medal recipients, news items related thereto might I call your attention to the Epherema & Collectibles group. Even if you have something not Society produced, that's a good place for it.

As for anything like explorers, writers, scientists, etc. (who have been featured in NGM or Society stuff ) who have a book or something that is not an NGS/NGM/NGC item proper, but bears heavy connection or inter-relationships, I guess I need to create a new group like I was thinking of back in Dec.

I have some stuff too that I wanted to share that is not technically NGS, but is so intertwined or connected that it seems worth sharing, but there seemed no place to put it "off to the side".

If you have something specific you can private message me and I'll offer a recommendation where to post it. As for the various Book groups I set up, I just wanted to indicate that since there are several distinct eras or book series lines, to merely have one sole group for "All NGS Books" seemed like an invitation to confusion and a lack of delineation between genre, era, type.

Thus why I created the Book Service, Special Pubs, Vintage/Tech., and 'modern era' w/ loose date ranges. The exception would be Atlases since there was some consensus that they should be apart of the Maps group.... in the sense of "cartography" items.

Hope this helps some of the intention behind the Groups. For a long time there was a lack of specific groups, such that discussions + postings were just all disappearing in the wall feed and you'd have to go digging for things without knowing what was where, when, by who. At least in theory, you can go to a Group and expect to find relevant discussions and they seem to visually show up more prominently.

Should we have a group exclusively for The (NGM) Magazine itself? If not, I am momentarily stumped as to the best place for reprints to go . . . other than just a general discussion on the main wall.

I will get a group made for "Ancillary/things connected to NGS" to hopefully encompass what you might have, and what I know I have.

    Go for it, Bro.

Yes it is and it is in the original mailing tube, sent to my great grandmother.

  • Randy Rydberg

I actually don't have a subscription yet as I'm unemployed right now, but I've read the two issues that are out (at the store) and am going to subscribe immediately when I'm working again!  I'm actually going to subscribe to the main magazine again after being away for a few years, there are so many Geographics out there that need homes, and it's cheaper to buy them second-hand.  But I miss having them show up in the mail, that's a nice thing too.  And the digital access to the entire back issue catalog is going to be nice to have.  I have the CD's for that now, but they need to be updated.

  • Donald Whitfield

    Scott,

At one time, I had every NG issue from my birth-month, March '47, to the current issue but a couple of cross-country moves significantly trimmed my collection (although I have retained all the maps). Never kept them in slipcases. Sad to say, though, after subscribing for over four decades, I have made the decision not to renew. I think that the magazine has become slighter and less adventurous and has shifted the fine balance between text and photos (to the detriment of the former) that it so skillfully maintained for many, many years. For me, it had a good run and I'll continue to enjoy re-reading many of the back issues I still possess.

Hi Scott, my cabinet is more for storage and display. Wood double doors on bottom half and glass doors on top. There is a carved wooden head on top peak.

Thanks, Scott! A couple of weeks ago I combed through eBay listings. It appears most years back to about 1920 can be purchased for $30 or so. Then I realized I had the cart before the horse -- I really need a carpenter to build bookcases, THEN I can buy the years I need prior to 1946. I never heard back from the lady in Nashville, so I guess she chunked that large accumulation she had.

  • Lovisa

Thank you Scott for reaching out!

We still have ways to go, but please see below what I'm looking for:

    I am still looking for years 1888-1973 w a few exceptions. Also looking for 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, 2004, 2009-2016.

I do have: 1919, 1959, 1962, 1963 in the above requests so do not need those.

    Thank you!

    Sincerely,

    Lovisa

Thanks for the welcome. I actually have property in the UP... not far from Mqt.... if you're familiar with the Peshekee Grade or the McCormick area. Love it up there but don't get there as often as I'd like or should. Marquette is great town.
As for me, I can't say I'm truly a collector of NG, but my father was, although I don't think he realized it.... he had every issue saved from 1947-48 to present. The first 10 years or so were bound in blue hardcovers with a gold embossing on them, six issues per book. Unfortunately the covers had to be removed in order to bind them. The 1959 through about '65 issues also have the covers removed in preparation to be bound but I don't know if those covers became unavailable or why he never finished them. The rest of the magazines from '65-'66 are intact, including the indexes and as far as I can tell all maps and inserts are still there. Everything seems to me in excellent condition.
He also had about 90 special edition hardcover books.
As I stated earlier, I can't really consider myself to truly be a collector although I wish I could.... when I look through them they are just so cool I can't help but feel that the intrinsic value, not to mention the sentimental value, is far greater than any monetary value. I just don't know if I have the room for all of them or would be able to store them properly.
That's what drew me to join this site... hoping for some advise and suggestions. I know there's not really a lot of monetary value and would hate to see the collection get broken apart for the few pieces that may be desirable to somebody for a little bit of money. If that's the case then I may as well keep the issues that I find desirable, along with the maps and inserts, and either trash the rest or if possible, donate them.
Quite the dilemma and time is running short because my father's house is going up for sale.
Thanks for listening, and thanks again for the welcome.
Let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Steve

    Thanks Scott,

You and Phil (especially Phil) have posted so many covers and map in albums, I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

    Hi Scott

I’ve been dealing with health and family issues for quite some time.  Finally starting to see daylight and hope to commence posting some of my unique article reprint .jpgs and data, into the group I started, soon.

Just in the process of finding and sorting all of the items.  I do have a number of, what I believe, are one offs (in that, I’ve never before seen them identified online).

Amazing! Spot on Scott, this is magazine that I am enquiring about. I have had it in my attic (safe and dry) for years and always thought it was a special edition. I have had a scan around online to see how much it may be worth but ended up even more confused with so many differences in value. This is one of the reasons for me joining the group alongside trying to start a collection of historical magazines. The copy I have is complete and in very good condition with the unused attached record. Can you point me in the direction towards who in the forum may be able to advise me?

    Many thanks

    Mike.

Thank You Scott ! I look forward to selling all my Nat Geos.

Let me rephrase that; I look forward to the financial benefit of selling them.

I don't look forward to being without them, but I need to sell them.

THAT I DIDN'T KNOW!  HOW VERY COOL!  Thanks!

  • George Thomas Wilson

    Scott,

There were three ships named Yankee, a Ketch, a Brigantine, and a Schooner cover in the pages of the Nat Geo.  The first and third images you posted were of the Ketch, the correct ship, but the middle image is of the Brigandine. (A lot more sails.)

  • William Heisel

Thanks Scott for the kind comment.  Tom Wilson alerted me to the treasure trove of images posted by Phil Riviere, including most of the maps that are in the articles of the old magazines.  So what I am doing is largely repeating what he did.  I guess what I am adding are some maps that were missing from his collection, and I am titling them just as they were in the original issue (for better searching), and I am putting them together in their own albums.  So maybe I am not adding that much to what Phil did.  Still I am glad you liked it.  I love history, and I love maps even more, so I am enjoying this project immensely.  One recent map I copied is "The New Germany As Limited by the Peace Treaty" from June 1919.  That map has a lot to do with the reasons for the outbreak of WWII, so I am going to read the article that goes with that one.  I want to flesh out more of what I already know of that map.  And I am curious if and how much that article presages the war that comes 20 years later.  Take care.  Bill

  • William Heisel

Hello Scott, I finished the in article maps from NG issues from the 1910s.  Phew!  Only 12+ more decades to go ?!?  You are right.  That decade is rich in exploration and discovery, history too.  Take Care.  Bill

  • Robert Schmitz

Thanks Scott! I love having them to show my nephew a slice of life of the past. There needs to be some context for very early issues, but it's all important!

  • Antonio Ripoll

Noicccce one, mate. So, you have it as well?
