National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Tom suggested I copy this from my posting in Buy/Sell/Trade.
I wouldn't bother with the CD or DVD ROMs for NGM. The picture quality is abysmal, and isn't that the whole reason for Geographics? On the web at Internet Archive you can find old NGs with great picture quality.

Error Message During Install
I discovered this yesterday [May 2024] when I was trying to install the software reader on a new computer.
What a crazy trick: change the date to 2010! (I was running the new computer under Windows 7)

I realize this is almost 4 years later but I have looked for a solution to the exact same problem with installing The Complete National Geographic on a Windows 10 and didn't find an answer. After much trial and error I discovered if I changed my clock back to 2010 it would install. Once the installation completed I could change the clock back to today's date and the software works.

I also came across this page while trying to install The Complete National Geographic on my HP Laptop running on Windows 10 as of August 2020. I had installed Adobe Air as the National Geographic support suggested (https://help.nationalgeographic.com/s/article/complete-national-geo...). Reading here, I thought I'd set the year to 2009 just to be safe (earlier than 2010) but it didn't work! Oy! So I tried setting it to 2010 and it worked! No installer error, now I can look at old Nat Geogs until school is back in session in a few weeks haha. thank you @ceezee1!

Keith,

That was not quite what I suggested (edit your post and move it), but this accomplishes the same thing: it is not a reference and will be easier to find in the long run.

BTW, Congratulations on completing your collection.  I was elated when I completed mine.  I'm sorry you are having mixed feelings.

Yours in collecting,

Tom Wilson

We are the last generation of NG collectors. No one will be interested in my collection after I'm gone.

Did you see the post from the woman who could not sell the 1964 Reprints 1888-1897 for $200?

I thought I got a good deal at $1,250 for 1888-1907, but now I'm not so sure. As Mel put it, "supply and demand and timing." Supply is there, but demand has fallen into the basement.

It's indeed quite sad to read so many ads from people that want to get rid of their old Geographics but don't manage to give them away even for free, so they end up in the recycling bin. Here in Europe they're not so common, but most homes in the States keep a bunch of Geographics in the basement, and there's no market for so many of them.

I've bought every number of the Spanish edition since it was launched in 1997, and I started to buy older issues in English in 2016, when I found a few hundreds in an antique shop in Vigo and bought all of them for 1 euro each. After that, it was easy to find issues from the 1960s on in Spain through the Internet. For older issues I made a few big purchases from the US, most of them through this website. Shipping was a hassle, but in the process I knew wonderful people that were willing to help and made everything they could to get them delivered to Spain. The sellers were either the family of collectors who passed away or collectors themselves who knew that nobody in their family would be interested after them.

Now I have every unbound original starting in 1896, missing only March 1897 and a bunch of supplements. As you say, timing (and luck) is crucial - a couple of years ago I got all the 1964 reprints (1888-1907) from the daughter of a collector in Madrid for 150 €.

My kids are still very young, and I don't know if they will be interested in my magazines (or my coin and banknote collection) after I'm no longer around. Until then, I enjoy going through them and reading some articles - they see me, and they know how I like them and how valuable they're for me. Who knows where we'll all be in some years or decades!
