Hello Frances...My name is Charles Gannon and I have been a long time NGS Collector and collaborator with the NGS Archives. Scott Shier shared your correspondence with him concerning the NGS flag handed down from your father's time with the NGS. Unfortunately, I cannot help you solve the mystery of the origins of the flag. My limited knowledge concerning NGS flags tells me that the flag is more modern than old. The importance and value of the flag would be determined by its connection to a certain expedition or event.

However, I must say I am excited to meet you. My collaboration with the NGS over the past 30 years has been essentially about the NGS - USAAC Stratosphere Flights of 1934 & 1935. An event that your father was deeply involved in. With my research and the NGS Archives patience, I have, by default, become the off-campus expert on the flights. I am currently helping caption the nearly 2,500 photos taken (mostly by Richard Stewart) during the preparations and flights of Explorer & Explorer II. Your father is a very young and handsome man in the photos. I would be both excited and thrilled to speak with you about your father and his role in the flights. Please feel free to contact me at charlesegannon@gmail or 765.610.1104. I am retired, so anytime would be fine.

Best wishes...Charles
