So by this point, I really thought they had stopped doing these "alternate" covers for N. American editions of NGM. It's been a bit of time since the last instance . . .

A couple of interesting points:
This is the version I received with my subscription (got it yesterday, other version is on order).
The inside of the issue has been revamped (I think you'll like it).
Unlike the four-version year-in-photographs issue a couple years ago, there is no mention of the alternate covers in the issue.
I have a theory (far-fetched and probably wrong) that the cover in color was designed for a newsstand version that was cancelled. Note the bold title and the eye-catching photo.
