National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

As I am sure some of you know, NGS puts together a map cabinet for Presidents of the US, the Society trustees themselves and select other individuals (Churchill to name one).  My Grandfather, John T. Colbert, had (for lack of a better
term) and obsession with collecting anything NGS related.  He has given to
me one of the map cases that he purchased from The Decatur House Museum prior
to its closure back in the 90s.

This one belong to Carlisle Humelsine, a trustee form the 1970s.  The trustee was apparently fond of the Old Post Road picture that appeared in a NGS issue, and had that put on the front as opposed to the more typical maps.

I have made a few attempts to speak with NGS to see if they would care to have it for their  collection in DC.  As there has not been much response, I have decided to sell it.
Regretfully, I have no place for it, but I knew the other members of my family
were neither concerned with its value or history.  I'm hoping that here
amongst true collectors it finds a better home.

I am located in the greater Atlanta area.  I am note sure how much it would cost to ship this thing as it is HEAVY.

Please feel free to contact me with questions.  rhcolbert@hotmail.com is my personal email address, and hcolbert@rsui.com is work, and the best way to get a hold of me  - I have a blackberry
associated with this address.

Below is the new article where Obama received his Map Cabinet.  Attached are a few pics.  I have more, to include paperwork from the National Trust for Historic Preservation from when he bought it from The
Decatur house.
