After 40 some odd years of collecting, I need to find a home for these magazines. I am seeking ADVICE on how best to find a buyer or institution that might have an interest.
All issues are individual, each housed in a plastic sheath and stored in NGM slipcase (1913-2017) or stored in acid -free folders and boxes (1888-1912)
With the collection, there is also a separate complete collection of the later individual issue reprints in NGM slipcases, 1888-1907. I have found that it is far better to read the articles in the reprinted issues than subject the original issues to further trauma.
There are also books and ephemera that will be submitted with the collection.
I am absolutely in NO RUSH. I am curious what other collectors have found to be helpful in finding a future home for such a large and comprehensive collection. Has anyone found an appraiser with expertise in these magazines who can write an appraisal for tax purposes? It seems most of the previously well-known NGM vendors are inactive or retired.
Selling individual issues seems out of the realm of possibilities since I have absolutely no interest in dealing with the incredible hassle of selectively selling of issues, maps or ephemera. The value is the completeness of the collection and the quality of the individual issues. Or is that the curse in any attempt to sell a complete collection?
Any comments on your experiences and advice would be helpful. Please spare me the burden of answering requests to sell individual items. After 40+ years of enjoyment in collecting and reading, dismemberment just seems much too cruel to endure for this collector. No offense is intended.
Regards,
John Mahoney
