Does National Geographic still produce 2 per-year index booklets for current years? If so, what's the best way to request/acquire them? I haven't seen mention of them anywhere and the most recent ones I've run across on ebay so far are for 1990. If they stopped producing the indices, can any of you share which year was the last that they produced?

Daniel,
The Society produced their last pair of volume indices in 1992 (volumes 181 and 182). From 1993 to 2010 they produced an annual index of all their publications produced that year: National Geographic, World, Traveler, etc. From 2011 on, their hasn't been anything resembling a volume index.
BTW: I have images of all my volume/annual indices in two albums here at the 'Corner. You can see them here:

there also has not been a published (book form) Index for National Geographic Magazine since the 1989-1998 "supplement" book (1999). So truly the last great NGM Index was the Centennial Index 1888-1988 (1989).
NGM itself discontinued it's annual Index snapshot which was published on the last page of each December issue, with the 2010 year. None since then.
Then in 2015, the NGS Libraries & Information Services ceased updating its searchable online master data indexing (which covered all books, magazine titles, special programs, special editions, etc.).
/sigh/
