Jarod,
There have been 1452 issues of the National Geographic Magazine from Oct. 1888 thru Jan. 2015
Phil
There are 1465 so far up to and including December 2014.
Volume 1 had 4 issues (yr. 1888-1889)
Volume 2 had 5 issues (yr. 1890)
Volume 3 had 5 issues (yr. 1891-1892)
Volume 4 had 7 issues (yr. 1892-1893)
Volume 5 had 6 issues (yr. 1893-1894)
Volume 6 had 9 issues (yr. 1894-1895)
Total first 6 volumes is a total of 36 issues
Volume 7 thru 24 had 12 issues each for a total of 216 issues (yr. 1896-1913)
Volume 25 thru 31 had 6 issues each for a total of 42 issues (yr.1914-Jun 1917)
Volume 32 only had 5 issues, (the 5th issue was a combined 5-6 issue for Nov-Dec 1917) total of 5 issues (yr. Jul-Dec 1917)
Volume 33 thru 158 had 6 issues each for a total of 756 issues (yr. 1918-1980)
Volume 159 had 7 issues (There was an extra February Special issue on "Energy") total of 7 issues (yr. Jan-Jun 1981)
Volume 160 thru 183 had 6 issues each for a total of 144 issues (yr. Jul 1981-Jun 1993)
Volume 184 had 7 issues (There was an extra November Special issue on "Water") total of 7 issues (yr. Jul-Dec 1993)
Volume 185 thru 226 had 6 issues each for a total of 252 issues (yr. 1994-2014)
So the totals above are: 36 + 216 + 42 + 5 + 756 + 7 + 144 + 7 + 252 == for a total of 1465.
Lloyd,
1888-1895 = 36 issues
2014-1896=118 years x12 issues =1416 +36 =1452 -1 (Nov/Dec 1917)=1451 +2 (water & energy) = 1453 + 1 (Jan 2015) = 1454
I was 2 off (counted only regular issues). There were 12 issues per year from 1896 thru 2014 (with the -1 and +2 noted)
Phil
Phil,
(reposting because it doesn't come up)
I apologize, but I am compelled to correct your formula.
It is not straight subtraction because of the term "inclusive."
That is, you are counting 12 months of the last year in the formula, hence, it is x - y = z+1
or
2014 - 1896 = 118 + (1 year) = 119 years.
There were "two" combined issues: Jul/Aug 1897 and Nov/Dec 1917 ( - 2).
Yes, the NGS counts the water and energy "special editions" as unique issues (+ 2).
And of course, the first 36 "red brick" issues AND the one issue of January 2015.
Therefore you have the following:
36 + ({119 x 12 = 1428} - 2 +2 = 1428) = 1464 + 1 (Jan 2015) = 1465 total NGM issues to date.
Kindest Regards,
Mel
Phil & Mel,
My math goes this way.
1888-1899 = 83 issues.
1900-1999 = 100 years x 12 issue per = 1,200 (-1 N/D 1917, +2 Energy & Water) = 1.201.
2000-2014 = 15 years x 12 issues per = 180 (+1 Jan. 2015) = 181.
83 + 1,201 + 181 = 1,465.
Tom
Tom, Mel and Lloyd,
Thank you guys for showing me the error of my ways......
Yours in collecting,
Phil
