National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

Hello. I recently acquired around 200 vintage National Geographic Magazines. Many of these are still in the brown mailing wrapper and include the inserts/maps.

At the same time I was given several "packets" of National Geographic Pictorial Geography for Teachers/Schools. I can't locate any info on these.  They are really interesting.  I have a couple completed sets while others are incomplete and missing between 1-4 cards.

Anyone know anything about these sets?

Thanks!

Both Roger Nathan and Edwin Buxbaum wrote about the pictorials in their respective guide books (check the link on the main page in the upper left margin titled "Published Sources for NG History."

Buxbaum's third edition, page 276, lists 6 Travel Packets with most broken down into Groups and Sections with Group I Sections I through VI spanning the first three Travel Packets; Groups II and V are in Travel Packets 4 and 5 respectively with Group V only having Section III (No Group III or IV). Finally, Group 6 is unnumbered with 48 plates.

Hope this assists you.

Mel

I thank you for your assistance.

Is there a way to get this information online vs physical copy? It appears this book is difficult to locate in most libraries.

Again, I THANK YOU.

Collectibles of the National Geographic Society by Roger E. Nathan (Serendipity Press, 1982) is basically a checklist for collectors of all things National Geographic.  Here is his checklist for the Pictorial Geography packets:

Mel has already listed the Buxbaum citation so that about covers all I have on these items.  Feel free to copy the image.

If you are really enjoying your Pictorial sets, let me know what #'s you are missing (from what set) and I could see about getting you a decent copy(-ies) of them, so that at least you have something for your gaps and can still have benefit of seeing/reading them, even if they aren't original prints...

best,
