National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

Years ago while staying with a friend of my grandfathers who showed me how he was famous. He had an issue of national geographic that showed him with his bomber crew in I believe north Africa. I thought the article was about air crew in north Africa bombing Italy. Does anyone recognize this article. I believe the issue was in 43. Is there a site where I can look at old copies online to help me find it. I believe the photo was in color but its been 15 years since I saw his copy.

Here are "some" articles that may be close to what you're looking for:

Jan 1948: Fun Helped Them Fight

Feb 1946: Our Global Strong Arm

Mar 1945: Return to Florence & 8th Air Force in England

There were many more articles listed from Jan 1940 through Dec 1950 that discussed some aspect of Army Air Force throughout the world, but these were the only ones "in color," and no article (on this subject) 1943 and earlier was in color.

Specific details would help narrow the search.

Hope this helped!

Here's an eBay link where you can purchase National Geographic Magazine on CD:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=na...

This would allow you to do a relatively inexpensive search for the exact article, then, if you wanted a hard copy of the magazine, you could purchase it on eBay.

Good luck!

Mel

John, can you give a better description? When you say friend and grandfather and "he," which are you referring to, the friend or your grandfather? Is there a name in the cutline? Thanks.

It was my grandfathers friend his name was Hank Harris. I dont believe it had a name in the line.  The picture showed the crew of the bomber under the nose looking at a map prepping for a mission.

John, Aug. 43 NG has a photo of American pilots and Soviet mechanics under tail of Mitchell bomber in Iran. Lt. William Stewart is named.

Is the attached picture from the Jan 1948, article titled: "Fun Helped Them Fight," what you're looking for?

The next page of the article in the Jan. 1948 issue has basically the same pix of guys looking at a map but a different plane and different guys.

The pic you posted I dont believe was it but thats the type of picture it was.

Is it this one?
