Greetings!
Quick question:
I am trying to find an approximate value for the June 1985 NG (original) with the Afghan girl on the cover. Can anyone help me?

Geetings,

I didn't see this message in Sept., but I'll briefly reply now.

Depending upon condition, the June 1985 can range from $1-10, realistically. Anything above that is pushing it, and probably wouldn't sell.

If you have the April 2002 issue as well, then you could have the pair of them priced a little higher. The '02 issue featured the Afghan girl (Sharbaat Gula) on the cover again, holding a photo of the 1985 cover. The cover title said "FOUND!" Essentially, she was unknown and "m.i.a." all those years and they only just discovered her identity and whereabouts in 2001/2002 - in the wake of the US vanquishing the Taliban.

The N.G.S. has long prided itself on the "Afghan" photo (those eyes!), and it has become infamous as the Society's own "Mona Lisa" image. Heaven knows, they reprint it all the time in various places.

take care,

Scott T. Shier
Hi, I'm sorting thru some NG's I have and found this website and in it - your question. With regard to the reply from Scott - I have a "Selections From National Geographic". It contains on the back cover the photo described by Scott of the Afghan girl - veiled and holding the 1985 cover photo. It also contains the story and more photo's inside. If you're interested in this copy let me know. It's in good condition - in case to be safe I would venture to say - "near perfect" - no ragged edges and no signs of age or use.
Hi - I have a copy of "Selections from National Geographic" which has the Afghan Girl holding the 1985 cover phot as described by Scott below. Let me know if you're interested in it. It is in good condition.
