National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

My grandma has all the national geographic magazine complete years dating from 1946 to 1990. I think most of them are in good condition and have been stored upright on a bookshelf in a darkish basement. She might be interested in selling her collection, as she is in great need of cash right now (still lives at home and needs to move to a nursing home). What would be her best option to sell these to get the most cash? Should she sell them (1) as individual issues (2) a complete year at a time (3) the entire collection all together? I'd really appreciate some feedback, as I really don't have any good resources for this. You may also reach me at pageandtoon@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Hi,

The best chance is to list them on eBay on a year-by-year basis. That way you don't spend time and effort on each issue, and you also don't spin your wheels trying to sell the whole chunk together.

The condition of the issues is important. In all honesty, if these are beat up or damaged, then they are not worth anything really. Also key, is whether the separate maps are still present or not?

Even if you were to use eBay, make a listing on your local Craigslist too (even your local community paper/ads). I sold off some of my extra years for $9-14 a while back, being from the 80's-90's.

I am sorry to hear about her needing to move to a nursing home and hope that all is somewhat okay for her and you and your family.

kindly,

Scott S.
