This is a December, 1988 issue with both printed in silver foil and gold foil.  It was determined that the gold foil would be the best cover to use for the issue.

The one hologram issue from 1984 is not from China, but was a back up issue in case the other issue was not ready in time for printing.  Also, the other issue, November, 2003 shows two versions of the newsstand issue...it was not a duplicate as seen by the bar code.  I have a few more that I will get to you soon.

Both of these magazines have a sticker affixed regarding a Dinosaur Named Sue.  They were purchased at the Sue exhibit at the Chicago O'Hare airport at the Sue exhibit

This magazine has an article regarding Carter's Grove and could be purchased at Colonial Williamsburg.  It has a paper band around the magazine.

I do not have anything but the year 1904.  This is one of the very few items that has eluded me and other advanced collectors prior to  me for many years.  I did find a person who collected only this magazine and items related to it and he does not have this copy as well. I have tried many magazine and book dealers over the last 30+ years as well, all with no luck. I believe it to be vary rare magazine and would very much like to have it in my collection.

Here are three more magazine articles to ad to your list

1.  Aero Digest December 1935, page 45, Entitled The "Explorer II" Stratosphere Balloon.  This is a one page article about the technical aspects of flying the balloon into the stratosphere.

2.  GW Times (George Washington University); Feb/Mar 1972, page 10-11.  Entitled Melville Bell Grosvenor.  It is an interview of Mr. Grosvenor and what, at age 70, he expects to accomplish in his present role with the "Geographic".

3.  Publisher's Weekly; January 8, 1973, Volume 203 #2 pages 40-44.  entitled The Phenomenal Success of the National geographic Book Operation.  This discusses the growth of the boo service and also discusses the advantage of their non-profit status has over other publishers. There is also a discussion about how Mrs. Kennedy she developed the White House Historical Association after reading an article in the January, 1961 NGM.

Here are the two versions of Volume 1 No.3 as mentioned by Buxbaum on page 77 of his 1971 Collectibles book.

The differences are as follows:

The rule on the cover measures 4 5/16" x 7 1/4" on version 1(3) and 4 5/1" x 7 1/4" on version 2 (3a).

Magazine measures 2" on version 1 and 1 3/4" on version 2

The distance between Washington DC and the next rule is 1/4" on version 1 and 3/8" on version2.

There is also a difference of one of the inside page numbers, but due to the fragile nature of these magazine I won't open the magazine to check.

Here are three covers for the December 2010 issue.  One is without the bar code and the flap and King David on the left hand side.  The other two have King David on the right hand side.  One with a bar code and flap and the other with no bar code, but has a flap.  The one with the flap and no bar code was mailed to a member (I have the polybag and address label inside the bag.  The other one with the flap and the bar code is a newsstand issue.

Tom,  This is an oddity involving page 858 of the December 1976 issue.  During the press run of this issue Rowe Findley, the issue editor for the story on Australian wild flowers became aware that the word "fuzzy" should not be broken at the end of a line.  He had the printers stop the run and reset the last four lines in the middle of the paragraph.  By changing the word "colors" to "hues" the lines could be reset and the word "fuzzy" remains unbroken.

Version 1 is with fuzzy hyphenated

Version 2  is with the correction

I just received this in the mail from a friend.  It is an unopened March 2018 issue of the NGM entitled Cosmos.  The other ones that I have are entitled Astronauts with a picture of a women astronaut.

I am not sure.  The individual I received it from lives in the US.  He cut the mailing address out from the label.  Inside the magazine it just mentions US and Canada in the subscriptions area with no mention of the UK.  That was my thought initially, but I don't know how else to tell.

Hi Tom,

I don't know if this interests you, but it is a book authored by Roger Nathan copyright 2000.  He had an avid interest in state boundary monuments and he started in 1982 and ended in 1985.  He stated he became "hooked" much like collecting geographics. He first worked on the Delaware-Maryland monuments and then went to the Mason-Dixon line. Many of my visits with him involved him driving me around and showing me these monuments and giving me the history behind them.  It is a very interesting read.  I am not sure how available the book is...he gave me a signed copy in 2003.

Hi Tom,

It took me awhile to digest your Map Indexes article.  Very nice and it brought more clarity to this area of collecting. I would  like to add two other outline globes, one for April 1949 (British Isles) and the other March 1950 for Africa.  I do not have the ones for 12/50 Western Europe and 3/53 for Mexico and Central America in my collection

I have 4 other outline globes all copyrighted in 1962  Three of these are reprints British Isles, Pacific Ocean and Classical Lands.  The fourth is a revision, Canada, Alaska and Greenland.

Also, do you have an index for Feb 1921? Europe, showing countries...  I have one, but it is with a white cover, not the conventional cover.  I have looked at it under high magnification and the cover (if there was one)does not look to be detached.  Also, have you seen a may 1933 index of the United States.  I do not have that one as well.
