Advertising in The National Geographic (Magazine)

~ MENTION THE GEOGRAPHIC -- IT IDENTIFIES YOU ~

A place to discuss and post classic and modern Ads on any product or service found in The National Geographic Magazine, and welcome...

Fellow 'Corner member Philip Riviere suggested that there be an Ads (advertising) Group. As many collector's and others know, the vintage ads found in National Geographic Magazine over the years are classic, and truly a time capsule of days gone by.

It it noteworthy that there is an entire breed of enthusiasts-collectors (often non-Nat Geo 'o-philes) who revere, obtain, and collate NGM ads as a stand-alone hobby. They will buy or take NGM's simply to remove the ads for their general collections of myriad advertising materials.

Especially nostalgic for many --akin to a Norman Rockwell type of sentiment-- are the old Coca-Cola ads, and also in particular the automobile ads for Ford, Packard, GM, Chrysler, etc.

** I'm wondering if this group will also need to be inclusive of advertising topics in general, as pertains to the Society at-large, the Channel(s), as well as more contemporary marketing aspects. **

WILDLIFE, AS CANON SEES IT ~ 1981-2020

One of the most famous long-running advertising campaigns --in print media-- was the partnership between National Geographic magazine, and Canon Inc.

It was conceived as a way of highlighting a specific animal in each months issue with stats and info. about each creature such as geographical habitation, population figures, size proportion and other tid-bits about their behaviors.

The first such ad debuted in the July 1981 issue, below:

This ad campaign then ran uninterrupted for each month for the following 4 decades, until, sadly, the December 2020 issue, below:

There were two instances where the Wildlife As Canon Sees It series was specifically called out and celebrated in the magazine, in the August 2008 issue of NGM. This consisted of a 2-page spread remarking on the campaign, and was signed off  by the Canon Inc. Chairman + CEO Fujio Mitarai, and Society Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Gilbert M. Grosvenor.

The occasion was the 120th anniversary of NGM in that year, 2008.

The next, was a rear side ad on a perforated pull-out poster in the October 2013 issue of NGM, which was the 125th anniversary of the magazine then, signed off by Canon Inc. Chairman + CEO Fujio Mitarai.

I must admit though, I do miss this series since it was terminated.
