Rarotonga International Airport (IATA: RAR, ICAO: NCRG) is the Cook Islands' main international gateway, Situated to the west of the main district of Avarua and three kilometers from the downtown area which is on the northern coast. Bill Johnson was the 'official construction progress photographer' for Rarotonga International Airport from start to finish. The airport was first opened in 1973 and officially opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Bill was also the official C.I. Government Photographer for the Royal Visit of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II who officially opened the Rarotonga International Airport in January 1974. The current international airport is capable of operating aircraft the size of 747's.
During the second World War Rarotonga's original airfield was built of crushed coral and used by the US marines in 1942 based in the South Pacific.
