I just watched a 2018 symposium lecture by Editor-in-Chief Susan Goldberg, and she indicated that NGM LOST 10,000 subscriber/members because of this cover (story). Specifically, that NGM was talking about trans-gender and/or placed a transgender + 9 y/o girl on the cover.
Editor Goldberg showed a picture in her slideshow that showed many copies of this (STILL in plastic baggie, sealed) that subscriber's sent back to NGM H.Q. To wit: people protested and quit their subscriptions without even opening the issue!
