National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

I currently light most of my bookshelves from above using LED light strips (the DIODER from IKEA. Will this cause any significant damage to my collection of older books and NatGeo mags? (My collection today mainly consists of issues from 1913-1922.)

I've attached two photos below.

I can only speak from experience. I do not see that the lighting will affect your books or Nat Geos. I have not witnessed this to happen myself on the spines or covers. Of course, its that darn sunlight (UV) that wreaks the havoc!

My Geos and (NGS books) are my babies and I hate that I do not have proper display and storage of them.

Welcome to site!!

Thanks for sharing your experiences and the warm welcome, Scott. I'm thinking that since most of my collection of magazines aren't in "collector's condition", the lighting might not matter too much. Luckily, natural lighting doesn't hit any of my bookshelves so I think I'm UV safe.

As a collector, I'm happy to have my small collection of older magazines, but as a reader, I'm excited to have them back on shelves where I can skim through them at a moment's notice.
