Map Indices

This album contains photos of the covers to the National Geographic Map Indexes. It contains images of all my collection (90) plus 2 not in my possession. More photos will be added when they become available.

Not counting the first index, you can see the covers evolved over time. First with the shaded seal at the top, then in the center. They were followed by a brief set of plain white covers. Then there was a "busy" period, where the covers contained images of the map and of the cover to the magazine for which it was a supplement. Finally, the end with a series of pairs of World/USA map indices.

Attached are images of the maps for which the indices were created. Also, if available, I'm attaching photos of the unshaded seal versions of the indices.

The indices are dated by map date with index year, if different, in parentheses.

As always, maps, unless otherwise specified, are courtesy of Philip Riviere.

Tom - awesome! Thank you for this  : - )

It's cool you are adding the map images to each Index, too.

Thanks Scott.  I just finished.  Still have to write an article introducing/linking to it.  Also, to list the ones I still need to request photos (and hope someone has any to sell).  That can wait until tomorrow.  This took me two days straight of work.

This is great!  I just came on here to ask about the map indices.  Naturally, I would love to own a collection of them, but given the time and expense involved in such a pursuit, I'm not really considering it.  I would very much, though, like to simply obtain their contents.  Does anyone know if there are scans of these available online that could be downloaded?  Not just the covers, but the actual contents as well.  Thank you.

John Evici,

Unless someone has a privately made set of e-files they made of the Index pages, I know of no sources for (scanned) images of all interior pages of these many map Index booklets....

Bummer!  Thanks for the reply, though.
