Spiegel Grove, Oriskany, and more recently Vandenberg, are just a few of the ships which have been sunk to create artificial reefs off Florida's coast. These artificial reefs become, overtime, a habitat for varieties of fish, algae, coral, and many more species... Despite thier benefits as reefs some of the decommissioned vessels may actually become hazards as contaminants may leak from such for years, hence the tedious and costly process of removing such prior to sinking.
