WILDLIFE, AS CANON SEES IT ~ 1981-2020

One of the most famous long-running advertising campaigns --in print media-- was the partnership between National Geographic magazine, and Canon Inc.

It was conceived as a way of highlighting a specific animal in each months issue with stats and info. about each creature such as geographical habitation, population figures, size proportion and other tid-bits about their behaviors.

The first such ad debuted in the July 1981 issue, below:

This ad campaign then ran uninterrupted for each month for the following 4 decades, until, sadly, the December 2020 issue, below:

There was one instance where the Wildlife As Canon Sees It series was specifically called out and celebrated in the magazine, in the August 2008 issue of NGM. This consisted of a 2-page spread remarking on the campaign, and was signed off  by the Canon Inc. Chairman + CEO Fujio Mitarai, and Society Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Gilbert M. Grosvenor.

The occasion was the 120th anniversary of NGM in that year, 2008.

I must admit though, I do miss this series since it was terminated.

    Scott,

Nice writeup. I thought you would have included the ad on the back of the October 2013 perforated poster. You even made a comment on it in Phil's album.

BTW: You should put a copy of this discussion to your Advertisements group for posterity.

    Yours in collecting,

    Tom

This was my favourite back cover series. Sad to see it finish.
