I recently purchase a pair of article reprints from a fellow member here at the ‘Corner, with much appreciation. The first is a reprint of an article from the April 2021 National Geographic Magazine entitled “Return of the Florida Panthers.” The second item, while appearing to be an article reprint, seems to be an article which never appeared in the magazine. The article’s title is “Florida Enacts Sweeping Law to Protect Its Wildlife Corridor.” Its cover has a date of June 2021, but there is no article even remotely related to that topic in that issue. I am writing this post to request help in classifying this item.

First, a little background is in order. Both articles have the same author, Douglas Mann, and photographer, Carlton Ward, Jr. From the text in the article apparently the legislation was passed and sign in June 2021, thus explaining the date on the cover of the item. It appears to be a follow-up article to the earlier one. They both contain several of the same photographs, the same map, and they both have the same back cover, except the back to this item has a copyright of 2022 instead of 2021. I searched all twelve 2022 issues and did not find this article in any of them.

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this matter, if you are aware of this article in an issue that I missed, or of knowledge about similar items with which I can classify this non-reprint article.

I was recently fortunate enough to acquire an original copy of the very rare 1897 lecture to the NGS „The Annexation of Hawaii“ in excellent condition. Never thought I would see a copy of this. I believe this May be one of only 4 or so copies extant. The others I have been able to track down are at Ohio State University, Stanford University and in the National Library of Australia. Another copy sold at auction in California for $3000 in December 2021.

Back around a century ago it was quite common to bind magazines into books. In the case of National Geographic this was usually done by volume, quite often with covers and advertising removed. Sometimes, however, a certain article or a particular topic would pique a person's interest enough that they would bind an individual article or a compilation of several articles on a particular subject. These items don't fit into the usual classes of collectables. They are not article reprints but original articles removed from the magazines, unfortunately destroying the issues in question. I possess two of these hardbound books: the first is a compilation of articles about American Indians, and the second is an individual article about my home State of Maryland. (Thanks Scott !!!) I have included scans of each showing their front covers and spines.

A little background is in order. My wife has an avid interest in Native American culture. She has a collection of knick-knacks, artwork, and a library of books dedicated to the subject. In this collection, she has the National Geographic Society book, The World of the American Indian 3rd Edition (1989). Also she has the National Geographic set of "Native American Portraits - Sixteen Frameable Prints" (2012). When I saw this book advertised on eBay, I had to get it for her. It is simply titled "Indians" on the binding. Here is the breakdown of articles in order of their position in the book:

1. Jul. 1916: "The Luster of Ancient Mexico" by William H. Prescott

2. Aug. 1923: "Ruins of Cuicuilco May Revolutionize Our History of Ancient America" by Byron Cummings

My second book in this collection is of an individual article. It came with a map of Maryland from the same issue as the article. It is entitled simply "Maryland" on the front cover. This item was gifted to me and I have enjoyed reading it. The lone article is as follows:

The "Miracle" of the Telephone

As per Roger Nathan, there were three articles between 1937 and 1954 that were reissued as Article Reprints. The first of these, from the October 1937 issue and written by F. Barrows Colton, is entitled "The Miracle of Talking by Telephone". This 39 page article contains 41 black & white photographs. Its range of topics include the long distances of calls, telephone operators and linemen at work, and the equipment itself. One interesting thing I learned upon reading this article is that in 1937 there were more telephones in New York City than in all of France.

The second Article Reprint in this series is from the March 1947 issue. Entitled "Miracle Men of the Telephone" it is also written by F Barrows Colton and 24 black & white illustrations including "15 Historic Photographs" of Alexander Graham Bell by Gilbert Grosvenor. It also includes 20 color photographs by Willard R Culver entitled "Birthplace of Telephone Magic". This 44 page article deals more with the life of Bell including his work with the deaf as well as other contributions to manking from the Bell Labs including the war effort and the purification of Thiamin (Vitamin B1).

The last of these three Article Reprints is from the July 1954 issue and is entitled "New Miracles of the Telephone Age". It is written by Robert Leslie Conly. This 34 page article contains 12 black & white and 23 color photographs. Topics include "modern" developments from Bell Labs like color television and the "brains" of the Nike anti-aircraft missile.

The second item is a "Specimen in Minurature" from 1920. It measures 6 3/4" high and 4 7/8" wide. Its 32 pages mostly contain full-page colorized photos and drawing from previous issues of NGM. This item and others like it were use to drum up membership in the Society.

The back of this promo booklet contains one of those full-page colorized photos. It is a reprint of a black and white photograph from page 11 in the January 1914 issue of NGM entitled "Will He Come?".

The third item in my "One and Done" collection is the Index to the 1976 National Geographic Political Globe. While I do actively collect Map Indices, I am not looking to acquire any more Globe Indices.

The fourth item in this list is a more unique item, so I don't think I could every add a second item to it's category. It is the 1957 booklet "The National Geographic Society and its Magazine, a History by Gilbert Grosvenor". While I may acquire other books about the Society and/or its Magazine, no other will be a "faux issue".

My next "One and Done" is a National Geographic Traveler for June/July 2015 which was going to be thrown away by my daughter's in-laws. Even though it is not in the best of shape, I just couldn't see it get tossed.

My next item in this "collection" is an Atlas. This one is the 1960 National Geographic Atlas of The Fifty United States. Note: Photo is courtesy of Abramo Russo.

The next item in this "collection" is a rather unique item, therefore, I do not expect to acquire any more of its ilk. It is a template for a cover to an article reprint. This cover variant was used mainly in the early to mid sixties. It is actually on an over-sized sheet (larger than the front & back covers) designed for trimming to the correct size. Notice it is blank where the title and date would go.

The next entry to this eclectic list is the "National Geographic's Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways". It is a 352-page paperback with numerous photos and maps and covers tour and travel routes throughout the entire United States.

The next item in this "collection" is the folio of sixteen "Native American Portraits". copyrighted 2012.

My next entry to this "collection" is the ultimate addition due to the fact that it is the first, AND LAST, issue of the Nat Geo Science Magazine (Dec. 2017- Jan. 2018).

I expect to make more entries to this list in the future.
