National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

Having lost some issues of National Geographic magazine over the years I wondered if anyone has ever been brave enough to scan all the 138 years worth of National Geographic magazines to an accessible archive.

One of the most important issues I lost was responsible for me becoming an artist so it has massive significance to me. It is the issue with an article on the Australian artist Brett Whiteley. I remember there were photos of him and his sculptures in it but I can't remember the Vol or issue number so can't search for it and repurchase it.

I obviously contacted National Geographic but they said the don't have the staff or time to search.

If anyone knows that Volume and issue number I would be eternally grateful to them because I have been emailing people about this for about twenty years now.

I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Good morning Steven,

Well hopefully this can help you! I am attaching two  .jpeg scans of page 226-227 of the February 1988 issue of National Geographic magazine (also adding the front cover image). This issue does happen to be the one you cited as your 'favorite publication' Vol. 173, No. 2.

This article was titled simply, "Australians".

As far as I was able to discern, he is shown in the 2-pg. spread, and mentioned by name in the caption, as you cited above, though I am not finding that he is mentioned in the text of the issues' articles. . .

Let me know if I can help you with anything further.

Hi  Scot

I will go and buy that one.  I lost that one. My memories are awful as I'm recovering from mercury poisoning from dental fillings. This might be the issue though.   Thanks for replying and well done for being able to remember that so easily!

Best  Wishes and many thanks !

Steven

You are most welcome, Steven.
