The retro rockets were suppose to be jettisoned before reentry.  A warning light indicated the heat shield had come loose.  The decision was made to leave the retros on to hold the heat shield in place - not knowing what would happen.  John Glenn was lucky.

Positively one of my all-time most favorite of NGM artwork they ever did -- this is Iconic, and of course was on the cover.
