Rarotonga's main street in Avarua and not a traffic light in sight

Peak hour traffic in Rarotonga? No, not really. One of the first things to do on the island is to go and hire yourself a scooter or motor bike, they are the best way to get around the island and they cheap. Having a scooter means that you can just get up and go any time you like and you can circle the island in about an hour if you don't stop. You don't have to wear a helmut and there are no drink driving laws as such but as always, drink in moderation because a few people have left the island with a few road scars or 'Honda rash' as the locals call it. With not a traffic lights to be seen getting around Rarotonga can be a casual meander clockwise and anticlockwise around the road that circles the island. Scooters which are synonymous with the island – where the wheels are weighted down by mamma or papa and sometimes more than one chubby toddler clinging on for dear life.
