National Geographic's Collectors Corner

Collaborative site for collectors, dealers, & anyone interested in our history.

Hello Everyone,

I am a little late for the discussions that Jean, Scott and Kathy had regarding a collection of cartoons that occurred in magazines, newspaper etc.  I received some of these cartoons from Roger Nathan quite awhile ago in addition to the ones that I collected over the years.  I just ran across these and saw the discussions from 2009 and thought I would attach what I have.  I attached a few below, but was limited to three only.  The ones embedded in the text would only allow me to place them above.

I hope you can read them all!

This is an awesome collection.  Thanks for sharing.  I'll see if I can find any to add here.

Tom

Jeff,

Great job...wonderful material

Jeff,

Here are a few I'd like to add.  The first is courtesy of Lloyd Bonaccorso who posted it on the 'Corner in January

The second is from a 1929 Life Magazine.

The third is from a 1989 Penthouse.

Tom

Jeff,

Here are a few more Nat Geo references that I ran across while I was researching for another project.

They are from the Comic strip "Sherman's Lagoon".  (See attached PDF)

Jeff,

I just ran across the following website.  It currently has 16 references. 3 are the ones I referenced from "Sherman's Lagoon". A few more, you have already referenced.  The rest are new.

Tom,

What a neat site!  Thanks for including them.

Jeff

Jeff,

Just ran across this in my search for cultural references to Nat Geo.

Tom

Jeff,

While researching on the internet for a recent article on nudity I came across this reference.  I attempted to locate the comic strip unsuccessfully but thought I'd include the reference here just for your information:

Newspaper Comics

  • Referenced in FoxTrot as Roger believes Jason to be looking at these kinds of pictures after locking himself in his room having come home with an armload of National Geographic magazines (and is pleased, since Jason is still in the "girls are icky" phase). As it turned out, Jason bought the magazines because they documented the old Apollo missions.

Tom

Jeff,

Here is another one I just ran across.  It is in the May 7, 1945 LIFE Magazine, page 13.

Tom

Jeff,

While trying to add to my "How Others See Us" collection I found an item from John's list: the September 1986 Saturday Evening Post.  Searching it cover-to-cover several time, I have yet to find a reference or photo related to National Geographic.  The only think I found is a NatGeo-esque cartoon on page 8:

Tom,

There are a few references on John's list that I found no reference to National Geographic.  This is one of them.  I sent the items to you on Saturday.

Jeff

Jeff,

Several of John's entries have no month or date so are impossible to track down.  This was the first disappointment for me though.  He had the LIFE cartoon above as May 7, 1943.  There is no such issue, but I tried 1945 and lucked out.

I just got the items.  Boy was that FAST!  Thanks again, they look great.  Can't wait to post them.
