Today is the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. I vividly recall being in 1st grade, and our whole school was interrupted w/ an announcement, first in January about the CHALLENGER, and then a scant 88 days later, a similar P.A. call from the Principal to tell us about Chernobyl, and that we shouldn't panic. National Geographic, of course provided a degree of coverage on the Chernobyl incident, in its customary delayed and informative way.
Here's a broad run-down on NGM content regarding Chernobyl . . .

And also, from Smithsonian.com, "30 years ago today" --->
Thirty years ago, a meltdown at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union caused a devastating nuclear disaster, which still resonates today. The incident killed at least 30 plant employees and firemen, and the World Health Organization estimates that 4,000 people could eventually die of radiation exposure from the tragedy. Watch drone footage of the post-apocalyptic town that once thrived in the shadow of the power plant.
