Hi Mel,

Many thanks for this helpful information and for such a quick reply. I may continue to look around within the UK market and perhaps I will end up keeping it for my grandchildren after all!

Much appreciated

Mike,

A "fine" copy, in the US would be valued at around $6.00 - though many attempt to sell them for far more.

Remember, there were over 6 million copies produced of this issue. They are not hard to find.

The UK market is most likely a different story and, I'm sorry to say, I truly do not have the experience to guide you on selling your issue in that market.

Good luck!

Kindest Regards,

Dear Mel,

I joined the forum just yesterday and am already becoming quite enthusiastic in pursuing collecting NG mags as a retirement hobby. Can I congratulate and thank you for posting this fantastic article which is incredibly helpful to beginners like myself just starting out and also for more experienced collectors. Thank you also for posting the 'grading standards' which you use which is also really helpful and a very necessary tool for buyers and sellers and I will definitely be using this.

I have subscribed periodically over the years to NG but never consistently and always ended up giving my collection away to charity shops, hospital waiting rooms etc. The exception to this is that I have kept one edition for over 40 years which was given to me as a gift. This edition is the December 1969 vol 136, no. 6 which covers the 'first explorers on the moon'. I have always treasured this edition as an amazing historical document and out of respect for the person who gave it to me. Due to current circumstances however it becomes necessary for me to consider selling it. I have studied your grading criteria closely and my copy seems to fit in to the 'very good condition' category. Shortly before joining this group I did in fact look at ebay, gumtree and amazon but found the variation in valuations very confusing and was left feeling very uncertain on what would be a realistic value. I also scanned around online to look at what dealers would offer but as you point out, this is very minimal indeed and really not worthwhile.

Would you be kind enough I wonder to help shed some light on what you think would be a fair and reasonable asking price for me to advertise this particular edition which I would imagine (I may be wrong) may be quite sought for the reasons you state so clearly in your posts?

Many thanks again for your valuable help and willingness to share your experience and expertise with others which is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Mike King (Cornwall, UK).

As an NGM enthusiast I dread the thought of destroying the aging magazines, but I understand your frustration. No matter which way you go - it sounds like a lot of work.

Seems to me you can still sell the individual magazines for their ads, and let the purchaser tear them apart.

Good luck!

Thanks for the information...

It appears that NGM's past 1930 are probably worth more for their ads that as collectors editions. I was going to sell my collection starting with the 1930's, but the prices just are no there. I think I will be better off cutting of the bindings and saving the advertisements and sell those to advertising collector's by category; IE: cars, trucks, kitchen items, etc. What is your opinion?

I need help. I have many National Geographic magazines that were my fathers. Many of them dating back to the 1950. I would say 90% of them are in mint condition. How can find out what they are worth.
